Obituary - Juliana Nzomo

Juliana Nzomo

Mrs Juliana Nzomo passed away on 16 March 2009.

At the time of her death, Mrs Nzomo was employed by the Aga Khan Foundation as Senior Regional Programme Officer for Education in East Africa.  Before that she worked as Principal Economist/Statistician in the Planning Department of Kenya’s Ministry of Education from 1987 to 2001.

Mrs Nzomo completed a Master’s degree in Educational Administration at the University of Nairobi, and was a graduate of the IIEP’s 1993/1994 Advanced Training Programme in Educational Planning and Management.
She was a member of Kenyan research teams for the preparation of national education sector analyses, and also worked as a technical consultant for IIEP projects concerned with Institutional Management for Higher Education.

She was Kenya’s SACMEQ National Research Coordinator for five years, from 1997 to 2001.  She was senior author of the SACMEQ I Project report and co-author of the SACMEQ II Project report for Kenya.  Over the past two years she has been working closely with the SACMEQ team in Kenya on different aspects of the SACMEQ III Project.

Mrs Nzomo was a member of the SACMEQ Scientific Committee and has made important contributions as a faculty member during a number of SACMEQ’s Intensive Training Workshops. She was awarded the 2007 SACMEQ Research Medal by the SACMEQ Assembly of Ministers of Education for her “major contributions to SACMEQ’s research programmes through scholarly publications and service to the educational planning community in Southern and Eastern Africa.”  In 2008 she was invited to become Chairperson of the SACMEQ Scientific Committee.

Mrs Nzomo had always been insistent on the relevance of SACMEQ research work for improving education policy and also on the need for educational planning decisions to be made on the basis of high quality data. Furthermore she had been extremely adept at making the SACMEQ research results available to a wide audience in accessible formats.

The SACMEQ fraternity has lost one of its most talented colleagues and closest friends.
